Halloween is Saturday, Oct. 31. Norman’s Friday date is only a suggestion.

Halloween is Saturday · AI narrator

Halloween is Saturday, Oct. 31. The City of Norman has recommended that families trick-or-treat on Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m., because OU hosts South Carolina at home on Saturday. The city calls it a recommendation, and city officials told News 9 it is not a requirement. Families may trick-or-treat on the 31st.

The facts Halloween: Saturday, Oct. 31.
City recommendation: Friday, Oct. 30, 6–8 p.m.
Is it required? No. The city’s Aug. 25 notice says it is “recommending” Friday. News 9 reports “the recommendation is not a requirement.”
OU vs. South Carolina kickoff: 3:15 p.m. CT Saturday, SEC Network.

What the city actually said

The City of Norman’s Aug. 25 notice says the city “is recommending that families celebrate Halloween and Trick-or-Treat on Friday, October 30, rather than Saturday, October 31.” It cites public safety: game-day traffic closures and restrictions, more pedestrians near the university and Campus Corner, and fewer officers available for Halloween patrols.

The city does not set trick-or-treat hours by law. Its yearly Halloween notices give “recommended” hours; in 2025 the city recommended 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 31. Facts First found no Norman ordinance setting trick-or-treat dates or hours, though we did not review the full municipal code line by line.

Why police asked

Norman Police spokesperson Sarah Schettler told News 9 that game days require about 75 to 80 officers on traffic assignments while other officers keep answering calls. She pointed to road closures, one-way traffic, and cars parked along roads and in yards that make children harder to see. The city also cited impaired driving as a game-day risk.

It has happened before

This is the first OU home game on Halloween since 2009, when the Sooners hosted Kansas State, according to OU Daily reporting cited by the Norman Chronicle. The city made the same recommendation that year.

Not everyone is switching. A Norman resident of more than 20 years, a father of six, told the OU Daily his family will rally neighbors to trick-or-treat on the 31st. “They’re always ready for the 31st, not the 30th, not the 29th,” he said.

What nearby cities are doing

  • Saturday, Oct. 31: Oklahoma City (no set hours), Midwest City (6–8:30 p.m.), Nichols Hills (6–8 p.m.), per The Oklahoman. Moore recognizes Oct. 31 for door-to-door trick-or-treating, with no set citywide hours, per OKC Mom.
  • Friday, Oct. 30: Guthrie (4–6 p.m.), per The Oklahoman; that window is primarily downtown business trick-or-treating, per OKC Mom.

If you go out Saturday

Kickoff is 3:15 p.m. CT, so game traffic will be heavy in the afternoon and again when the game ends, likely in the early evening, about when trick-or-treating usually starts.

  • Stay in your own neighborhood and away from the stadium, campus and Campus Corner, where the city expects the heaviest traffic and closures.
  • Expect cars parked along streets and in yards near campus, and watch for drivers leaving the game.
  • Go with an adult, walk in groups, wear bright costumes and carry a flashlight (city safety tips).
  • Use sidewalks; cross at corners and crosswalks.
  • Drivers: slow down in neighborhoods and use a designated driver if drinking.
